It can be difficult to lose weight if you follow a diet that heavily restricts all sweets and treats. The 80/20 diet rule allows you to indulge once in a while still focusing on losing weight. This diet rule teaches you more than just how to manage your weight; it helps you to better understand moderation and balance. As always, speak to your doctor before making any changes to your diet, especially if you have a medical condition.

The Nitty Gritty
The 80/20 rule is more than just a diet — it is an approach to healthy eating habits. According to the rule, you must choose healthy foods 80 percent of the time. Because you eat healthy the majority of the time, you are allowed to indulge in a few favorite treats 20 percent of the time. For example, if you eat three meals a day, four meals per week can be your 20 percent cheat meals. Or if you eat five smaller meals per day, you can have a treat or two with seven of those meals a week.

So let’s face it…some of the time you live in the 20% zone…and you just want to indulge in your favorite but ‘not-so-healthy’ snack. You go to your local convenience store to buy your favorite chips or chocolate bar…what is yours 20% ‘go-to’ snack?

What about the rest of the time when you are living in your 80% zone and you feel like a snack and want to walk to your local convenience store for something to eat…do you have enough choices?

The Healthy Together Convenience Store Project is helping families make the “healthier for you” choices so living in the 80% zone is possible even when you are going to your local convenience store for something to eat.

What do you need your local convenience store to sell to help you follow the 80-20 rule in your life?
